$100,000 Donation to Medical Clinic Building Fund

Mr. Bruce Krug of Chesley has donated $100,000 to the Chesley Medical Clinic Expansion Project, the largest individual donation made to the clinic project.  Mr. Krug’s donation brings the local fundraising effort total to $990,000, with the total cost estimated to be $1.3 million.  Mr. Krug and his family ran Krug Furniture, a large furniture manufacturing business in Chesley from 1886 to 1987.  Mr. Krug and his brother also donated 600 acres of old growth forest to the Federation of Ontario Naturalists, ensuring the land would be left in perpetuity as a nature reserve.

Work on the clinic expansion is nearing completion and staff are expected to move into the new portion in early March.  At that point, renovations to the existing clinic will begin.  Once completed, the clinic will increase in size from the current 2,400 sq. ft. to 8,000 sq. ft. and will accommodate doctors as well as members of the Brockton and Area Family Health Team.  A total of 6,000 patients are registered at the Clinic and the six doctors see an average of 400 patients per week.

GSR Wood Products to Provide Economic Boost for Chesley

February 10, 2012, 10:05 am

GRS Wood Products Inc., a Toronto-based hardwood flooring distributor, has purchased a plant in Chesley to manufacture engineered hardwood flooring.  The plant expects to open with 50 employees from the local area and at full capacity, will employ more than 300 workers.

GRS Wood Products currently imports hardwood flooring products from China. The company offers engineered and solid wood hardwood flooring, with more than 150 products in stock at its 44,000-square-foot warehouse. Wood species include red oak, white oak, black walnut, cherry, hickory and hard maple.  The Chesley plant had been closed since 2008, following the downsizing and manufacturing consolidation by Durham Furniture to its main facility in Durham, ON, when approximately 150 people lost their jobs with the plant’s closure.

The addition of the GRS plant will provide a strong economic boost for Chesley.

Fantastic Community Support for Chesley Medical Clinic

In October 2011, a fundraising dinner and silent auction for the Chesley Medical Clinic raised $56,000 towards the new facility.

Area businesses and individuals donated more than 100 items for the auction which included 1,000 sq. ft. of asphalt, a cottage weekend, a locally made quilt and baking and preserves by prize winners at the Chesley Fall Fair.

The highlight of the evening was the sale of a print “Blue Sky-White Snow:  Eighty Years of Hockey” by artist Gary McLaughlin of Riversong Gallery in Neustadt, about half an hour south of Chesley.  The original paining measures six by twelve feet and took 20 months to complete.  It depicts every Toronto Maple Leaf player in the team’s 80 year history and contains 762 heads, two full-size figures, the three arenas the team has played in, the Hockey Hall of Fame building and all of the various Maple Leaf logos.  The work now hangs in the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Click here for a look at “Blue Sky-White Snow:  Eighty Years of Hockey”.
